AAA, DNR remind drivers to use caution as deer activity increases
NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - As firearm deer season approaches, auto insurers are reminding drivers to use caution. Deer are on the move more during this time of year.
Last year, there were more than 58,000 vehicle-deer crashes statewide. Thousands of those were in Upper Michigan. A Spokesperson with AAA says this time of year is the peak for deer activity.
“From October to December, deer activity rises significantly, due to a variety of factors. Mating, hunting season as well, so being in November, we are right in the midst of that. So, it’s really important that drivers are aware,” AAA Spokesperson Adrienne Woodland said.
A DNR Wildlife Technician says deer are typically more active during the dawn and dusk hours, and it’s not just because of hunting season.
“Typically, the first two to three weeks of November is when most breeding is happening in whitetail deer. So, what you’re seeing this time of year is bucks, male deer, chasing female deer, does, for breeding. Prior to the rut, movement is typically morning-night, but this time of year, it might be the middle of the day at noon,” MI DNR Wildlife Technician Colter Lubben said.
Lubben says that movement will be compounded by firearm season.
“The other thing that you have happening, especially starting Nov. 15, is you have firearm season, so you have a lot of individuals in the woods, bumping deer, pushing deer. They’re going to and from their stands, which is going to increase the amount of deer that are on the roads this time of year,” Lubben said.
Both Lubben and Woodland recommend using caution and slowing down in wooded areas. They also suggest using your high beams when safe, and never swerving to avoid a deer.
Finally, Woodland recommends consulting with your policy provider about comprehensive coverage if you’re concerned about a collision.
