DNR firefighters completely contain wildfire at Wetmore Pond
MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Michigan Department of Natural Resources firefighters fully contained a wildfire near Wetmore Lake on Sunday.
The Game II Fire burned about 4.6 acres. Michigan DNR Forest Fire Officer Andre Brown says crews responded to the trailhead along County Road 550 shortly after midnight on Sunday.
DNR firefighters met Marquette Township Fire at the scene and began suppression efforts. Crews hosed water from the pond and used leaf blower lines to contain the fire.
Brown says the fire’s cause is under investigation, but there is a decent chance it was a campfire from trail users. He urges people to follow the no camping or ground fire rules seen around the pond’s trails.
“Any fire that you start, you are responsible for, whether it turns into 4.6 acres or 460,” Brown said. “So, you’ll want to make sure that you stir it up apply water, and you should be able to feel it with the back of your hand without burning yourself before you leave.”
He says the trails are still open, but there will be mop-up activity.
