UPAWS closes ‘out of abundance of caution’ following recent parvovirus outbreak
SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter will temporarily close its doors to ensure the safety of all its animals.
A Facebook post from the shelter announced just after 1:30 p.m. on Friday that the shelter will close to the public for two weeks, effective immediately, due to the recent outbreak of parvovirus. This action is being taken out of an abundance of caution and with the well-being of the animals in UPAWS’s care in mind.
Essential staff are on site to continue caring for the animals and maintaining the facility.
Until further notice, there will be no animal services of any species, including adoptions, surrenders, strays and meet-and-greets. The building and the UPAWS dog park will be closed to the public completely.
The post says UPAWS will be closed for a minimum of two weeks. UPAWS will provide updates on Facebook as the situation develops.
