Meet NMU’s next president

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Northern Michigan University President-elect Chris Olsen stopped by the TV6 Morning News Monday morning.

TV6’s Mandy Koskela sat down with Olsen for a conversation about his professional and personal backgrounds.

Olsen says Marquette felt like home when he and his wife, Jennifer, visited for the first time.

“Everything feels like the town where I grew up...” Olsen said. “It just feels like home.”

Olsen said NMU checked all of the boxes of his search for a suitable place to further his career.

“Northern Michigan University really caught my attention,” Olsen said. “It’s a regional public university... just the kind of mission and students that I really am attracted to and really believe in as a kind of University.”

When asked about his goals for NMU, Olsen said he would first like to meet with community members and students.

“The first goal is to learn a lot about it...” Olsen said. “I want to meet as many people as I can.”

Koskela asked Olsen about his knowledge of the Upper Peninsula’s history.

“It’s certainly an interesting history,” Olsen said. “I’m looking forward to getting to know a lot more of it.”

On Monday, Nov. 10, Olsen will attend a Community Reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Northern Center Ballroom. Everyone is welcome.
