NMU starts construction for new on-campus apartments
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - More on-campus housing is coming to Marquette.
Construction has started for the new Northern Michigan University student apartments. Two buildings will line either side of Presque Isle Avenue behind Cohodas Hall. The apartments will be built on existing NMU property. NMU’s Temaki restaurant will be torn down and relocated for this project.
The $58 million project will house 386 beds, including 26 studios, 60 two-bedroom units and 60 four-bedroom units.

NMU Spokesperson Derek Hall says there’s a high demand for on-campus housing with growing enrollment numbers.
“We ended up triple-bunking students in certain rooms, and really, we need more beds on campus,” Hall said. “A lot more students are choosing to stay on campus rather than move off when they’re juniors and seniors.”
He says the apartments are specifically for upperclassmen: juniors, seniors and graduate students.
The apartments will be ready for students in August 2027.
The university also has a practice to plant trees on campus to replace ones that are cut down.
