Lake Linden resident raises pulmonary fibrosis awareness with 3.8K mile journey
LAKE LINDEN, Mich. (WLUC) - A scooter team is preparing to join a nationwide touring rally to raise awareness of a deadly disease.
The six-man Scooter Iceland team is participating in this year’s Scooter Cannonball touring rally, which happens every two years.
Bob Myers, a resident of Lake Linden, is a member of the Iceland team. Myers will be one of 260 riders who will have eight days to travel from Seaside, Oregon, to South Padre Island, Texas. That’s a 3,800-mile journey.
“I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a fun time,” Myers said. “It’s not a race. There are checkpoints, bonus checkpoints. There’s a handicap system in place to make it fair for all different sizes of scooters, but nothing over 300cc.”
Since January, Scooter Iceland has been raising funding and awareness of the fatal lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis. During their journey, they hope to raise far more. Funding would go directly to the Valhalla Fund, a pulmonary fibrosis nonprofit. It funds research to help those affected by the disease and teaches about the disease.
“One of our team members, our leader, lost his father to this horrible disease a couple of years ago,” Myers continued. “This is an opportunity to create some... support funds for families and patients that deal with this.”
The team leader, Christian Johanneson, is the CEO of the Valhalla Fund.
The rally begins early Sunday morning and wraps on June 30. Myers says the team will provide updates on their progress daily through their Facebook and Instagram pages.
