MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Upper Michigan is Someplace Special because of the hard work of individuals and organizations that make a difference in our community.  Each Monday, TV6 shines the light on these people and organizations with our UPside Report.  This week’s UPsider is The Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) at Northern Michigan University.

Founded in 1991, the Student Leader Fellowship Program at Northern Michigan University has been bringing students together to serve their communities. In that time, students have contributed over 146,000 hours of community service.  Student service has included coaching youth sports, volunteering at food banks, coordinating after-school programs, volunteering for children’s programs, and much more.

“It’s an opportunity for me to be able to help the community, which feels great. And I also get to hone in on my leadership skills and really learn, like, what kind of leader I am,” said Kelsey Glover, SLFP member.

“It’s changed me just in my perspective, I think, on other people to see so many people want to do good in our community and want to connect with others. And it’s made me appreciate the time I have here at Northern and the people I get to spend it with and it’s humbled me in so many ways,” added student-member Ahna Larson.

The program has graduated over 1,300 students who have been involved with community services at over 500 different sites. Teaching students to lead through community service is why the Student Leader Fellowship Program at NMU is this week’s UPsider, for making a difference to the people of Upper Michigan.
