Marquette City Police reminds pet owners to leash animals
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - People are starting to enjoy Marquette’s warm weather on bike paths, sidewalks and hiking trails.
However, before people bring their furry friend to the park, Marquette City Police would like to remind residents that Michigan law requires pet owners to keep their animals on a proper leash. The department says the City of Marquette also has an ordinance in place that states owners can be ticketed if their pet is off leash in public.
Marquette City Police says this keeps pets, owners and the public safe during walks.
“The city’s sidewalks, the bike path and places are very busy at times,” Marquette City Police Captain James Finkbeiner said. “Nobody wants to have a dog get hurt by a biker or somebody comes by and the dog darts and moves like dogs do. We also don’t want to have anybody else get injured, either.”
Finkbeiner also wants to remind pet owners not to leave animals in cars because they can easily overheat in the summer.
