Limestone Financial Credit Union issues alert on widespread text scam
MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WLUC) - Limestone Financial Credit Union is warning the community about a widespread phishing scam involving fraudulent text messages falsely claiming to be from Limestone’s fraud department.
According to a press release from the credit union, the messages reference suspicious debit card activity or claim that a member’s account has experienced unusual activity. Recipients are prompted to respond to confirm whether the transaction is authorized. Once a response is logged, the scammers call to “verify” account details, often asking for debit card numbers, PINs, or online banking credentials.
Importantly, many individuals receiving these messages are not even members of Limestone Financial Credit Union which suggests the scam is part of a broader phishing campaign, using the credit union’s name to create a false sense of legitimacy.
“This is a classic example of a phishing scam where fraudsters cast a wide net, hoping to trick recipients into handing over sensitive information,” said Jennifer C. Watson, CEO, at Limestone FCU. “We want to be absolutely clear: Limestone will never contact you via text asking for personal banking credentials.”
What You Should Know:
- Limestone will NEVER ask for your debit card number, PIN, or online banking information via text.
- These messages are not legitimate and are not sent by Limestone Financial Credit Union or its fraud monitoring partners.
- Do not click on any links or provide personal information.
- Even if you are not a member, you may still receive these messages, as scammers often use random or purchased phone number lists.
What to Do If You Receive One:
- Do not engage with the message.
- Report it to Limestone by calling or texting (906) 341-5866.
- If you accidentally provided information, contact your financial institution immediately.
Limestone Financial Credit Union is working with its fraud prevention partners to monitor the situation and is taking proactive steps to protect both its members and the broader community.
