Students injured when 5 school buses crash on interstate on way to band competition

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPLC/Gray News) - Several high school students in Louisiana were injured in a crash while on their way to a marching band competition on Tuesday.

According to the Lafayette Police Department, the crash involved five school buses and a truck pulling a band trailer from Chalmette High School on Interstate 10 in the afternoon.

Authorities said the crash happened when one of the buses collided with a bus in front of it, which caused a chain reaction with the rest of the buses.

Lafayette Police Sgt. Robin Green said six students were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

According to Green, the buses were heading to the Louisiana Music Educators Association State Marching Championship at McNeese State University.

Police closed a portion of I-10 for their on-scene crash investigation for nearly two hours.
