Reviewing ballots to officially declare Matt Morgan as the Democratic nominee

Ballots are still being reviewed to officially declare Matt Morgan as the democratic nominee on the November ballot.

On Wednesday, the Marquette County Board of Canvassers met to review ballots. Together they had to go over the 4,643 unresolved votes under the First District Congressional Democrat nominee, breaking down the write-in votes in the townships and precincts.

After the ballots are reviewed in Marquette County, they will be sent to the Michigan Board of Canvassers.

Once certified Morgan said, he will officially be the democratic nominee.

"We were just so excited with how many voters showed up and worked hard to get us on the November ballot," said Matt Morgan.

Morgan said unofficial vote counts from Tuesday's primary shows he will be on the ballot to face Republican Jack Bergman in November's general election.

"More than 40 percent of the number of democratic voters who voted in in the primary in Michigan’s 1st District, actually wrote me in so it was an incredible turnout," said Morgan.

Earlier this year, the state disqualified Morgan from being put on the primary ballot after a problem with the paperwork he filed to run.

Morgan must receive write-ins on at least five percent of the total ballots cast in the race with the most votes in the democratic primary in Michigan’s 1st.

"We had to run a write-in campaign," explained Morgan. "Voters were able to write-in enough, we may have as much as seven times the number of votes we need to qualify for the November ballot."

Between now and the general election on November 6, Morgan plans to continue getting out and meeting voters.

"If there’s one lesson that I have learned in this campaign, is that people are tired of the toxic environment in politics, so we are just going to keep doing what we have been doing this far, because it has carried us a long way and we think it will carry us to a victory in November."
