MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) -- The Northern Michigan University Women's Swimming and Diving team defeated Division I University of Wisconsin Green Bay for the first time, winning 174-120 to finish the dual meet season 8-1.
The Wildcats won the first race of the day as the team of junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England/Burnside College), senior Becca Arakelian (Livonia, Mich./Livonia-Stevenson), junior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.) and sophomore Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.) captured the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:46.05.
NMU saw four athletes win multiple events, led by Helm's three victories. Helm won the 100-yard backstroke with a time 55.84 and followed it with a winning time of 51.84 in the 100-yard freestyle. She finished her day by winning the 100-yard butterfly, posting the time of 56.50.
Sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy/WFO Auer) won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.68. She then won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.51. Sophomore Gabriella Spajic (Sydney Australia/De La Salle Catholic College Cronulla) saw victory with a time of 2:08.46 in the 200-yard butterfly and followed it a victory in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.44.
Freshman diver Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind./Northridge) swept the diving events for the Wildcats. Her first event, the 3-meter dive, saw her post a score of 265.28. She then took part in the 1-meter dive and scored 249.07 to win.
Two addition swimmers finished the meet with a victory each. Sophomore Lena Soulas (London, England/Woodhouse College) claimed victory with a time of 24.72 in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Dana Stroven (Howell, Mich.) touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke, capturing the victory with a time of 1:06.37.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, January 19 as they will celebrate Senior Day in an Intrasquad Meet. As the final meet before the championships, the Wildcats will also conduct their annual Skins races, pitting each swimmer against each other in a fun competition between teammates.
