Wildcats sending 18 to Swimming and Diving Nationals

MARQUETTE, Mi. Northern Michigan University Swim & Dive will send 15 swimmers and three divers to the NCAA Division II Swim & Dive Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana starting Tuesday, March 12 and runs through Saturday, March 16.

The men's team will send eight swimmers and two relays to nationals while the women will send seven swimmers, three divers and four relays.

The men's qualifiers are led by Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) who has qualified in three races, the 100 and 200-yard Freestyle races, both of which he won at the GLIAC Championships. He will also compete in the 100-yard Backstroke.

Senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia) also qualified in the 100-yard Backstroke and will take part in the 200-yard Backstroke. Bundzis ranks sixth in the NCAA in the 100 Back and fourth in the 200 Back. Senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia) also made two events. Leonard qualified in the 200-yard Individual Medley, which he ranks fifth, as well as the 200-yard Backstroke.

Senior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain) will compete in the 200-yard Butterfly while senior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica) will swim in the 200-yard Breaststroke.

The men's 800-yard Freestyle Relay and the 400-yard Medley Relay. To aid these relays, freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn), junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany) and senior Benjamin Lindberg (Skelleftea, Sweden) will also attend the meet.

On the women's side, junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England) qualified for the four events she won at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Helm will compete in the 200-yard IM, 100-yard Butterly, and the 100 and 200-yard Backstroke. Helm is the defending 200 Back National Champion and won the 100 Back her freshman season. She is currently ranked fourth in the 100 Back, third in the 200 Back, fifth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 Fly.

Joining Helm at Nationals will be senior Regan Kilburn (Muscatine, Iowa), senior Savanna Saunders (Manchester, England) and Lena Soulas (London, England). Kilburn will swim in the 100-yard Backstroke with Saunders competing in the 200-yard Backstroke. Soulas will take part in both the 100 and 200-yard Freestyle. Soulas captured the 100-yard Freestyle at the GLIACS.

The women will also send three divers. senior Angela Probstfeld (White Lake, Mich.), junior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) and freshman Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) to the Nationals. The divers will attend the Pre-Qualification Meet on Tuesday with the top 16 divers advancing to the NCAA Meet starting Wednesday.

The women's team will compete in the 200-yard Freestyle relay, the 400-yard Freestyle Relay, the 200-yard Medley Relay and the 400-yard Medley relay. Junior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.), sophomore Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), freshman Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.) will also go to the meet to compete in the relays.

Swimmers who qualified for one event are allowed to swim any other races where they posted an NCAA Provisional B-Cut. All divers who qualified for the meet will dive in both diving events. Live results and video of the meet will be made available once it is provided.
