KENOSHA, Wis. (WLUC) – Northern Michigan University visited the University of Wisconsin Parkside Saturday afternoon for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup and collected their third sweep of the GLIAC season and fourth this year by defeating the Rangers 3-0.
NMU took an early lead in the first set, pulling head 10-4 after a kill by freshman Abigail Durecki (South Lyon, Mich.). Sophomore Lizzy Stark (Minneapolis, Minn.) soon converted back to back kills to move the Wildcats lead up to 14-8. The Rangers managed to pull within 16-12, but NMU answered with a four-point rally to make it 20-12, and soon had a 24-15 advantage after a kill by sophomore Alyssa Milski (Oregon, Wis.). After three points from Parkside, Durecki got the set-winning kill from freshman Lauren Van Remortel (Carmel, Ind.) to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead after a 2 5-18 set win.
The Wildcats pulled ahead 10-4 with a kill by sophomore Hailey Wickstrom (Calumet, Mich.) and soon held a 14-7 lead after kills from Stark, Wickstrom and Durecki, and an ace by freshman Madeline Crowley (Green Bay, Wis.). Parkside was able to fight back, pulling the match to a 21-20 NMU advantage. However, Durecki got a kill followed by a block from Van Remortel and senior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis.) before two errors by the hosts gave the Wildcats a 25-20 second set win.
FINISHING THE MATCH
Parkside jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but the Wildcats fought back to tie it at 15-15. The teams continued to battle until the match was tied at 20-20. Wickstrom and Kuehn both notched kills to answer Parkside points, then NMU took a lead after a bad set by the Rangers to make it 23-22. After the Rangers tied it at 23-23, Kuehn tallied another kill which Parkside answered, bringing the score to a 24-24 tie. Stark and Durecki then sealed the victory with a kill each to give the Wildcats a 26-24 set victory and a 3-0 sweep over the Rangers.
Wickstrom paced the Wildcats with 12 kills on 20 attempts, committing no errors for a hitting percentage of .600. Kuehn added 11 kills with just one error on 18 attempts, hitting at a .556 clip.
Stark added 10 kills while Durecki chipped in with nine. Van Remortel recorded 36 assists. Stark also had two aces.
Sophomore Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) led the team's defense with 18 digs. Sophomore Lauren Caprini (St. Charles, Ill.) aided the effort with 12 digs and Stark contributed nine.
Van Remortel finished with a team best four blocks while Kuehn posted two.
The Wildcats are now 10-12 on the season and 6-5 in the GLIAC while Parkside moves to 8-15 overall, 3-8 in league play. NMU returns to action next Saturday to take on rival Michigan Technological University in Vandament Arena.
