Wildcats Finish Fifth at GLIAC's, McDonald Earns Second Team Honors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLUC) — Northern Michigan University Women's Cross Country began their 2018 postseason schedule Saturday afternoon at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hosted by Grand Valley State University. The Wildcats finished fifth as a team lead by senior Sophie McDonald (Park City, Utah) who turned in an all-conference performance.

ALL-GLIAC
For the fourth-consecutive, McDonald earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors with a 19th-place performance. She finished the six-kilometer race in 22 minutes, 54.90 seconds, less than a second off her season best time. McDonald is just the third Wildcat in program history to receive all-conference honors in each of their four cross country seasons.

BACK-TO-BACK
Senior Nicole Schneider (Plymouth, Minnesota) and junior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minnesota) crossed the finish line consecutively in 21st and 22nd. Schneider competed for the second-consecutive weekend after winning the Upper Peninsula Championships two weeks ago. She finished the GLIAC Championships with a time of 22:57.20. Torvi crossed the finish line in 22:58.60, topping her previous career best by nearly 10 seconds.

SCORERS
Rounding out the NMU top-five were junior Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Michigan) and junior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wisconsin). Smith had her best six-kilometer performance of the season, finishing in 27th with a time of 23:12.00. Du Bois was the final Wildcat to score after finishing in 50th and crossing the finish line in 24:27.00.

NEXT UP
Postseason play will continue for the Wildcats in two weeks when they travel to Hillsdale College for the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championships. NMU will compete for their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships at the meet.
