Welsh Picked as the GLIAC North Player of the Week

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Junior Ellie Welsh of the Michigan Tech women's basketball team was selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. Welsh had one of the best games of her career against 20th ranked Lewis University this past Saturday at the SDC Gym.

Welsh, a junior guard from Rockton, Illinois, matched a season and career high with 15 points to power the Huskies' offense on Saturday afternoon against the Flyers. Welsh was 5 for 5 from the field and a perfect 4 for 4 from three-point land. She also posted 15 points earlier this season against Bellarmine University at the USI Thanksgiving Classic November 24th. In addition to her shooting and scoring totals, Welsh tacked on a pair of assists and a rebound in the contest with Lewis.

Through 11 games in the 2018-19 season, Welsh is averaging 6.8 points per contest while converting on 48.1 percent of her shots from the field. She is second on the team in three-point shooting, finding the bottom of the net on 43.2 percent of her opportunities from long distance. Welsh is also second on the team in assists per game at 2.8 and on the boards she hauls down 2.3 rebounds each night.

Welsh and the Huskies will travel to the University of Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday for a non-conference game before the Holiday Break. The tip-off is scheduled 2 p.m. eastern time.
