Weightlifters earn gold medals at Junior Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Two Northern Michigan University United States Olympic Training Site weightlifters earned gold medals at the 2017 Nike National Junior Championships in Kansas City, Mo., held Friday-Sunday.

Taylor Turner of Saint Augustine, Fla., competed in the 58 kg weight class. She earned gold in both the snatch and the clean and jerk, lifting 80 kg and 98 kg, respectively. Her 178 kg overall total, clinched her third gold for the competition.

Placing first in the 105+ kg weight class was Ryan Sennett of Rochester, Mich., with a 320 kg total. Like Turner, Sennett earned gold for both the snatch and clean and jerk, lifting 140 kg and 180 kg, respectively.

The gold-medal performances qualified the athletes to participate in the Junior Pan American Championships, scheduled for May 1-8 in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Two other NMU-OTS athletes finished in the top 10 of their respective weight classes: Jonas Hagan placed fifth at 85 kg and Michaela McIntosh finished sixth at 53 kg.
