Volleyball Defeats LSSU on Senior Day

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Northern Michigan University Volleyball team celebrated Senior Day by defeating Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Lake Superior State University in their final home match of the season.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to the match, the Wildcats honored the team's seven seniors. The seniors included Kaila Mathews (Hoover, Ala.), Maggie Liebeck (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco), Lynzi Svoboda (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest), Janie Torola (Calumet, Mich.), Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley), Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Jessica Skonning (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township).

SET SCORES
The first set was close early with a 4-4 tie, but NMU pushed out ahead 13-6 and eventually went ahead 19-10 before closing out the set with a 25-15 win. In the second set, LSSU bounced back from an early deficit to rally to a 25-23 victory.

The third set was close early, with NMU holding an 11-10 lead before the Wildcats went on a 14-5 rally to win the set 25-15. The Lakers rebounded to take the fourth set 25-21 to force a fifth set.

NMU jumped out 3-1 early in the deciding set and pushed that lead to 9-4 when LSSU called timeout. After two more points for the Wildcats the Lakers called another timeout. Out of the timeout, the guests scored but NMU responded with a kill by Monsma and then an attack error by the Lakers gave the team a 15-5 set victory and the 3-2 match win.

LEADING THE WAY
Monsma led the Wildcats with 18 kills and also led the team with 28 assists. Skonning added 14 kills with junior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis./De Pere) chipping in with 12. Liebeck posted eight while Svoboda notched six.

Svoboda also posted her fourth match of the season with over 50 assists, finishing with 53 assists on the day.

Freshman Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) tallied four aces to aid the effort while sophomore Cierra Martinez (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) had three. Svoboda contributed two aces.

THE DEFENSE
Defensively, Braunschweig finished behind Monsma with 23 digs. Yacko had 16 with Svoboda tallying 11. Svobobda also led the team with eight blocks. Kuehn totaled six blocks, including a team-best two blocks. Martinez helped NMU protect the net as she had five blocks. Liebeck aided the effort with two.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats improve to 15-9 on the season and are now 4-9 in the GLIAC while LSSU fell to 5-19, 2-11 in the league. NMU will now prepare for just one match next weekend, taking on rival Michigan Technological University Friday night in Houghton, Michigan.
