BAY CITY, Mi. Northern Michigan University Swim & Dive swept the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swim & Dive Athlete of the Week honors as junior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England/Burnside College) and senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School) were this week's honorees.
Helm has been named the Women's Athlete of the Week for two consecutive weeks after earning the honor last week as well. The junior highlighted her results by breaking her own PEIF Pool record in the 100-yard Backstroke with a new record time of 55.76 during Saturday's meet with St. Cloud State University and Northern State University. She was also a member of the winning 400-yard Medley Relay team. During Friday's meet, Helm captured the 75-yard Backstroke in 41.55 and helped the Wildcats win the 125-yard Medley Relay.
On the men's side, Bundzis earned the recognition after winning the 200-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:52.51. He was second in the 100-yard Backstroke and took third in the 25-yard Backstroke. He also helped two relays touch first, the 125-yard Medley Relay and the 400-yard Medley Relay. He is the second NMU Men's Swim & Dive team member to earn the award this season.
The pair helped the Wildcats earn two victories on the men's side as the Wildcats defeated SCSU both Friday and Saturday while the women beat SCSU and Northern State in double dual meets. The team now enjoys a break from action before their next meet on November 3 as they host Grand Valley State University and Saginaw Valley State University inside the PEIF Pool.
