FORT WAYNE, In. The Fort Wayne Komets of the East Coast Hockey League announced the signings of Anthony Nellis and Gage Torrel on Friday.
Nellis and Torrel made their debuts for the Komets on Friday night with Nellis picking up an assist for his first point as a professional.
Nellis, a forward from Breakeyville, Quebec, finished his Laker career with 40 goals and 51 assists for 91 points in 148 games over four seasons. A 2019 Hobey Baker Award nominee, Nellis had a career year as a senior in 2018-19 — tallying career-bests in goals (15), assists (18), points (33) and plus-minus (+11). Nellis earned All-WCHA Third Team honors and was named a WCHA Forward of the Week and NCAA Third Star of the Week in 2018-19. Nellis, who had two game-winning goals as a senior, paced the Lakers in shots on goal (135) this season.
Torrel, a forward from Monticello, Minnesota, wrapped up his Laker career with 34 goals and 48 assists for 82 points in 148 career games spanning four seasons. As a senior in 2018-19, Torrel garnered seven goals, while recording career-bests in assists (18), points (25) and plus-minus (+20). He tallied three game-winning goals this past season, while assisting on the game-winning goal five times.
Nellis and Torrel are the third and fourth Lakers to sign professional contracts following the 2018-19 season. Seniors Diego Cuglietta and Steven Ruggiero signed with the Texas Stars (AHL) and the San Diego Gulls (AHL), respectively,
This season, the Lakers (23-13-2) won their most games in a season since 1995-96, recorded the longest winning streak since 1996-97 (seven games), swept Ferris State in a road series for the first time since 1993-94, swept Michigan Tech in a series for the first time since 1983-84, won 16 WCHA Player of Week and five WCHA Player of the Month awards, had two Hobey Baker Award nominees, claimed the first Great Lakes Invitational Championship in program history and captured their first-ever WCHA Playoffs series win.
