WESTVILLE, Ind. (WLUC) – The Northern Michigan University Cross Country team competed in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday and saw three earn Second Team All-GLIAC honors as the Wildcats finished in fifth place.
Senior Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Mich.) led the Wildcats by placing 12th in a time of 22:09.5. Senior Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minn.) crossed the finish line at 22:25.7 for 19th place and freshman Madison Malon (Grandville, Mich.) was 20th at 22:28.8.
The trio all received Second Team All-GLIAC honors as a result of their success Saturday. It was Smith's second All-Conference recognition while Torvi and Malon both collected their first postseason honor.
Four more Wildcats scored points for the NMU squad. Finishing in 33rd was freshman Paige Saiz (Milford, Mich.), posting a time of 23:09.4. Freshman Meghan Langworthy (Big Rapids, Mich.) crossed at 23:15.4 for 39th.
Freshman Kimberly Carviou (Marinette, Wis.) was 47th in a time of 23:42.4 while senior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wis.) timed in at 23:46.4 for 50th place.
Five others also competed in the GLIAC Championships.
Sophomore Katrina Salmen (Peshtigo, Wis.) – 23:56.5 (65th)
Sophomore Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.) – 24:02.6 (70th)
Freshman Emily Sterling (Boyne City, Mich.) – 24:36.3 (77th)
Freshman Morgan Lyon (Traverse City, Mich.) – 25:03.6 (84th)
Sophomore Aubrey Friedrich (Lockport, Ill.) – 25:30.0 (90th)
NMU placed fifth out of 12 teams, scoring 123 points.
The Wildcats will now turn their attention to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Purdue University Northwest in Westville, Indiana. The race will be run on Saturday, October 26.
