MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Northern Michigan University’s Olympic Training Site weightlifters earned team titles in the men’s and women’s division for the second year in a row last weekend at the National University Championships in New Orleans.
The NMU women took home their first-place finish by scoring 84 points, followed by Lindenwood University with 54 pts. The NMU men totaled 141 pts. to finish on top of the podium. Lindenwood followed with 123 pts. and the Olympic Training Site team at East Tennessee State ended the competition third with 70 pts.
In the coed division, the NMU-OTS squad finished in second with 119 pts. followed by Lindenwood University with 147 pts. and East Tennessee with 93 pts.
Individual medalists for the NMU squad were Hope Stockel, Uli Manzanilla and Tom Piscopo.
Stockel lifted in the 58-kilogram weight class, earning a bronze medal for her 77-kg snatch. Her lift of 95 kg in the clean and jerk was just 1 kg short of a medal in that category. She earned a team high 22 pts. for the ladies with her 172-kg total.
In the men’s 69-kg weight class, Manzanilla took home a gold medal in the clean and jerk with a 153-kg lift and a silver medal for his 263 kg overall total. In the 77-kg weight class, Piscopo finished the weekend with three silver medals for his 128-kg snatch, 165-kg clean and jerk, and for the second-highest overall total of 293 kg.
The NMU team also had one participant in the Under 25 Championships, which were taking place in conjunction with the University Championships. Finishing in first place at 85 kg and earning three gold medals was Paul Woelmer. Woelmer lifted 130 kg in the snatch and 161 kg in the clean and jerk to end the competition with a 291-kg total.
