Smiddy keeps Finlandia Women's Hockey close to Lake Forest

hancock, mI. It was a battle all night long as the Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-6, 0-5 NCHA) lost 2-1 to Lake Forest (3-2-2, 3-0-2 NCHA), Friday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Lake Forest came out strong forcing Finlandia back on their heels almost the whole first period. The Lions had 11 blocks in the opening period. Junior Kait Ryynanen almost snuck one in as the period ended.

The Foresters came out quick scoring 15 seconds into the second period. Lake Forest would add another goal to take a 2-0 lead going into the final period.

With seven minutes left, Ryynanen had another potential goal stopped. At the 16:33 mark, senior Natasha Kern fired one it to make it 2-1. The Foresters were able to hold FinnU off for the win.

Junior Annah Smiddy was absolutely stunning in the net with 46 saves. She was helped by a defense that blocked 18 shots on the night.

Finlandia stays home, Saturday, Nov. 17 taking on Lake Forest. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
