Seniors Honors as Helm, Budai Win Skins at Swim & Dive Intrasquad Meet

The Wildcats competed in their annual intersquad Skins meet today. The men's and women's team celebrated new records and graduating seniors.


The Wildcats celebrated their eight seniors for senior day today and gave remarks about each graduating senior. The seniors are: Michael Biclawski (Canton, Ohio), Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary), Maksim Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn.), Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany), Rachel Helm (Newcastle upon Tyne, England), Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.), Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England), and Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.).


After 10 years, the mens and womens teams both claimed new pool records in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The men's team consisted of freshman Ivan Amillo Escobedo (Valencia, Spain), Budai, sophomore Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), and Reinhold, together touching at a time of 6:50.36, beating the previous time by almost five seconds. The women's record-breaking team included freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.), freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain), freshm an Pilar Perello Ferrer (Inca, Spain), and Helm. The women swam the race at a time of 7:38.72, beating the previous record of 7:42.31.


Along with the pool records came individual records. Helm made a new pool record in the women's 50-yard butterfly, touching at a time of 25.14. Freshman Roberto Camera (Rozzano, Italy) also put his name on the board with a new team and pool record in the 50-yard breaststroke, hitting the wall at 25.77.


The Wildcat skins tradition continued this year. Competing for the women was junior Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy), Helm, sophomore Brianna Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.), Nelson, junior Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia), Font Canrarero, freshman Jenna Joerger (Eagan, Minn.), and Perello Ferrer. Taking the skins title for the women was Helm.

Competing on the men's side was Camera, Reinhold, Kapustin, Budai, freshman Erikas Kapocius (Ignalina, Lithuania), Busse, sophomore Felipe Lamos (Curitiba, Brazil), and junior Drew Del Papa (Warren, Mich.). The champion for the men was Budai.


The Wildcats take a month off until the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships beginning on February 19th through 22nd, hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.
