Rough Saturdays for the Finlandia Hockey Teams

HANCOCK, Mi. (Women), DEPERE, Wi. (Men) The Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-16, 0-10 NCHA) lost 10-0 to #6 Adrian (14-2-3, 9-0-1 NCHA), Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Finlandia came out quick as 21 seconds into the contest, sophomore India Charles fired a shot that just missed. Starting at the 50 second mark, Adrian scored three goals in just over two minutes to seal the game.

On face-offs, freshman Cassidy Becia and sophomore Malone Hiebert had 10 wins each. The Lions were aggressive on defense with 14 blocks. Senior Sarah Gundry had 36 saves for a .925 save percentage in 40 minutes after coming on in relief to start the second period.

Finlandia hits the road, Friday, Jan. 31 taking on UW-Superior. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CST.

Power plays were the story of the night as the Finlandia University men's hockey team (4-15-2, 2-12-2 NCHA) lost 10-1 to St. Norbert (10-8-2, 8-6-2 NCHA), Saturday night at the Cornerstone Center.

For the entire first period, Finlandia and St. Norbert played on even terms. The Lions had several strong scoring chances that were denied. The Green Knights took advantage of a power play to go up 1-0 at the 8:24 mark.

SNC scored twice more in the first period. FinnU continued to pressure the St. Norbert goalie and saw two potential goals robbed by great plays. Another power play goal early in the second made it 4-0.

Finlandia broke through for a goal at the 9:49 mark as sophomore Tyler Watungwa scored off two great passes. In a five-minute span, the Green Knights scored three power play goals to seal the deal.

Finlandia is off until Thursday, Feb. 6 playing St. Scholastica on the road. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. CST.
