NMU's Helm Named GLIAC Swimmer of the Week

BAY CITY, Mich. (WLUC) -- After the Northern Michigan University women's swim and dive team captured their first ever win at the Calvin College Invitational, senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle upon Tyne, England) has been named Swimmer of the Week as announced by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. Helm boasted two individual first place finishes at the meet including signature swims in the 200-yard IM and backstroke.

Opening her swims on the second day of competition, Helm finished second as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay when the team touched in 1:35.35. Her other relay, the 200-yard medley relay, also won silver at the meet when she swam a 28.71 split in the breaststroke for a 1:44.05 team finish.

Over on the individual side of the meet, Helm won the 200-yard backstroke before placing first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.75 to round out her impressive performance at the three-day meet.

The weekly GLIAC honor comes as Helm's eighth career award and third in 2019-20, having previously been named Swimmer of the Week on October 15 and October 22.

Helm, along with her Wildcat teammates return to the pool on January 11, 2020 for a dual meet at UW-Green Bay.
