NMU Women's Swim and Dive Wins Big In Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLUC) - The Northern Michigan University Swim and Dive women's team finished the won the annual Calvin College Invitational with 1994 points for their first victory at the meet in program history.

RELAY SUCCESSES
The Wildcat A relay team touched second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.05 as the team consisting of freshman Jenna Joerger (Eagan, Minn.), senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle upon Tyne, England), senior Maddy Irelan (Owosso, Mich.), and freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) earned the silver medal. Following in fourth for the B relay was freshman Julianna Engesser (South Elgin, Ill.), sophomore Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.), freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain), and junior Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), touching the wall in 1:45.52.

ONE EVENT, TWO 'CATS

Freshman Maria Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) touched third for the Wildcats in the 500-yard freestyle at a time of 5:03.68. Freshman Francesca Gastrow (Hartland, Wis.) followed directly behind in fourth at 5:04.25. Both women achieved NCAA B cuts with their times.

Helm won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.93. Engesser took fifth, finishing at 2:07.21.

Font Cantarero placed in second for the 100-yard butterfly, hitting the wall at 56.30 while Joerger took sixth in 57.88.

THREE IN ONE
Helm took first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.75. Joerger followed directly behind to grab second at a time of 2:05.61. Font Cantarero finished in fifth for the Wildcats, touching the wall at 2:11.18.

BREASTROKE, BEST STROKE
The Wildcats took over the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy) snagged third with a time of 2:20.00. Following was sophomore Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.) touching the wall at 2:25.72 for fifth place. Next, junior Cassandra Clark (Newport News) finished in sixth with a time of 2:26.36. Rounding out the group was sophomore Lucy Londergon (Minooka, Ill.) at 2:27.88.

TOP THREE
The women swept the 100-yard freestyle to clinch the top three places and boost the team towards their first place team finish. Nelson hit the wall first at a time of 51.16. Vaitkus took second at 52.48, followed by freshman Pilar Perello Ferrer (Inca, Spain) who finished at 52.58.

DIVERS
Sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) led for the Wildcats, taking second in the 3-meter dive with 475.65 points. Senior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) placed sixth with 379.70. Sophomore Valerie Patterson (Wyoming, Minn.) scored 364.75 points, putting her at seventh. Freshman Amanda Baird (Riverside, Calif.) finished eighth with 362.45.
