GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLUC) - The Northern Michigan University Swim and Dive women's team concluded their second day at the Calvin College Invitational. Following a highly successful night in the pool, the women moved up to first overall with 957 points.
The Wildcats finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.35. Participating was freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.), junior Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), Pilar Perello Ferrer (Inca, Spain), and senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle upon Tyne, England).
WILDCATS ON TOP
Freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain) won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.03. Junior Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia) followed, touching at 2:09.08 to take fourth overall.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.) touched the wall second in 1:04.65. Sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy) snagged third at 1:05.82.
Taking on the 400-yard individual medley was Spajic and Springhetti touching third at 4:35.73 and fourth at 4:35.87, respectively.
Competing in the 50-yard freestyle was Nelson, touching the wall third at a time of 23.98. Vaitkus followed shortly after, hitting the wall sixth at 24.05.
Helm touched first in the 100-yard backstroke at 54.74. Freshman Jenna Joerger (Eagan, Minn.) finished second with a time of 55.66. Freshman Julianna Engesser (South Elgin, Ill.) hit the wall fifth with a time of 57.13.
The women took five of the top seven places in the 200-yard freestyle. Nelson finished first for the Wildcats, winning the event with a time of 1:53.28. Following in third, fourth, and fifth was Perello Ferrer with a time of 1:54.93, freshman Francesca Gastrow (Hartland, Wis.) at 1:55.50, and senior Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England) at 1:56.28, respectively. Rounding out the strong heat was junior Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.) with a time of 1:58.61.
DIVERS COME THROUGH
Sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) led the crew, taking first with 434.20. Freshman Amanda Baird (Riverside, Calif.) scored 413.50 to take third. Senior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) placed sixth with 390.05. Sophomore Valerie Patterson (Wyoming, Minn.) finished it up for the Wildcats with 316.65 points.
The Wildcats return tomorrow continuing the Calvin College Invitational. Tomorrow's events will be the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 400-yard freestyle relay, and 3-meter diving. The preliminary events begin at 10 a.m. and the finals begin at 6 p.m.
