NMU Swimming and Diving completes sweep of Findlay

MARQUETTE, Mi. In their second meet of the season, Northern Michigan University Women's Swim & Dive won defeated the University of Findlay once again, winning 199-92 Saturday morning. The Wildcats posted three NCAA B Cuts in the meet as well.

Freshman Amanda Baird (Riverside, Calif.) won the 3-meter dive with a score of 279.75, which got her an NCAA "B" cut. Sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 271.43, followed closely by Baird who got 256.42 points. Both women got the NCAA "B" cut for the 1-meter dive.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, the NMU swimmers took the top three places. Touching first was freshman Maria Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) with a time of 10:44.34. Taking second was senior Nicola Pasquire (Bedford, England) who finished with 10:54.30. Capping off the top three was junior Stefanie Rasmussen (Melrose, Minn.) touching at 11:17.40. Arakelian went on to also win the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:12.09.

Both relays of the day were taken by the Wildcats. Swimming a 1:47.60 in the 200-yard medley relay was senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England), sophomore Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.), senior Madelyn Irelan (Owosso, Mich.), and freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.). Taking the 200-yard freestyle relay was junior Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.), Helm, freshman [http://nmuw ildcats.com/sports/swimdive/2019-20/bios/perello_ferrer_pilar_zm9w]Pilar Perello Ferrer (Inca, Spain), and Nelson, finishing with a time of 1:39.62.

Multiple Wildcat women took first place in two events. Perello Ferrer won the 200-yard freestyle in a 1:56.28 and the 100-yard freestyle in 54.64. Helm took the 100-yard backstroke, touching at 56.41 and getting an NCAA "B" cut. She also took the 200-yard backstroke, finishing with a 2:02.50. Nelson won both the 50-yard freestyle in 24.91 and the 200-yard individual medley, finishing at 2:13.16. Freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain) also won both of her individual events. In the 200-yard butterfly she swam a 2:08.15 and for the 100-yard butterfly she finished with a time of 58.42.

Sophomore Katharina Springhetti (Tramin, Italy) won the 200-yard breaststroke for the Wildcats with a time of 2:25.35.

The Wildcats next travel to Fargo, North Dakota for a tri-meet against Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University on Friday, October 18 beginning at 5 p.m.
