NMU OTS earn medals in NYC

Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestlers earned one silver and two bronze medals Saturday at the Bill Farrell Memorial International, held at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.

NMU-OTS wrestler Austin Morrow of Wenatchee, Wash., won a silver medal in the 66 kg weight class. He faced Ktsuyoshi Kawase of Japan in the championship match, losing by pin.

Teammates Sam Jones, of Folsom, La., and Dmitry Ryabchinskiy of Brooklyn, N.Y, faced each other in the 59 kg bronze-medal match. Jones came out on top with a 3-1 victory.

In the 75 kg bronze-medal match, NMU-OTS wrestler Jesse Porter of Albany, N.Y., wrestled to victory by tech. fall over Brad Dolezal of the Minnesota Storm.

Teammate Jessy Williams of Windsor, N.Y., made it to the 66 kg bronze-medal match. He ended the tournament with a fourth-place finish after losing the match 8-0 to Mustafa Mohaney of the NYAC.

The Non-Olympic Weight World Team Trials were held in conjunction with Bill Farrell Memorial International. The first-place finishers at 71 and 80 kg earned trips to the Non-Olympic World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Dec. 10-11.

Competing in the final best-of-three championship series at 71 kg for the NMU-OTS team was Alejandro Sancho, of Miami. Sancho faced former NMU teammate Chris Gonzalez, now competing for the Army World Class Athlete Program.

Sancho earned a win in the first match, 2-1, before falling to Gonzalez in the second match 1-2 on stalling calls. In the third and deciding match, Gonzalez outscored Sancho 4-1.
