HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Northern Michigan University Nordic Skiing competed in the Pre U.S. Nationals CXC Cup in Houghton, Michigan this past Saturday and Sunday and came away with good success.
Junior Kjetil Baanerud (Oslo, Norway) finished second in the race consisting of over 120 skiers with a time of 3:20.75. Freshman Tobias Moosmann (Kossen, Austria) was right behind with a time of 3:22.50 for third place. Senior Mathias Aas-Rolid (Redalen, Norway) gave NMU three top seven finishes as he crossed in 3:24.74 for seventh.
Freshman Matt Bourne (Lake Elmo, Minn.) took 13th in 3:28.66 while junior Xavier Mansfield (Minneapolis, Minn.), 3:31.25 finished the race in 16th.
Four skiers competed in the women's race, led by freshman Malin Boerjesjoe (Umeaa, Sweden) with a second place finish in 3:57.25. Sophomore Katerina Hyncicova (Liberec, Czech Republic) was fourth, 3:58.89 and sophomore Savanna Fassio (Park City, Utah), 4:03.60, was sixth.
All four skiers finished in the top 15 as freshman Pauline Forren (Snillfjord, Norway) finished in 4:12.18. The race featured a total of 87 skiers.
In the MSR race, Rolid finished second in a time of 27:36.6.
Baanerud captured first place in the MU23, 26:41.1, with Moosmann coming in fifth at 28:03.1.
Mansfield finished seventh, 28.33.2, and Hipp, 28.53.5, was eighth.
Bourne came across in 28:39.5 to take first in the MU20.
Boerjesjoe's time of 32:36.4 placed her second in the FSR. In the FU23, Hyncicova was second with a time of 33:31.8 while Forren took fourth at 34:32.9.
Fassio posted a time of 34.23.6 to take third in the FU20 race.
The Wildcats return to action January 2 and return to Houghton, Michigan for the U.S. National Championships. The event begins Thursday, January 2 and runs through Tuesday, January 7.
