UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (WLUC) – The Northern Michigan University Men's Swim & Dive team picked up a 183-99 victory over Saginaw Valley State University Saturday afternoon after falling to Grand Valley State University in a busy weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Wildcats saw senior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) capture first place in two victories to lead the way. The senior captured the 100-yard backstroke in 50.79 and then posted a winning time of 21.85 to win the 50-yard freestyle.
Freshman Ivan Amillo Escobedo (Valencia, Spain) claimed the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.77.
NMU also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:09.54 with the team of Amillo Escobedo, Maksim Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn.), freshman Amir Saman Khajegi (Mashhad, Iran) and Budai getting the victory.
WINNING RELAYS AT SVSU
The team of Budai, freshman Roberto Camera (Rozzano, Italy), sophomore Henry Bauer (Howell, Mich.) and Amillo Escobedo opened up Saturday's meet at SVSU by winning the 400-yard medley relay in 3:27.45.
Camera, senior Michael Biclawski (Canton, Ohio), Amillo Escobedo, and Budai then also won the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:24.40.
Four Wildcats finished Saturday's meet by winning two races. Junior Ondrej Zach (Rudolfov, Czech Republic) won the 1000-yard freestyle, 9:40.43, and then went on to win the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.69.
Budai won the 200-yard freestyle, 1:45.13, and the 100-yard freestyle, 46.55. Camera captured two breaststroke races by winning the 100-yard, 57.93, and the 200-yard, 2:08.49.
NMU also claimed both diving events as freshman Ryan Leach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a winning score of 201.45 to win the 1-meter dive and 193.90 to win the 3-meter dive.
A SOLO WIN
Kapustin joined four other swimmers who each won an event. He touched first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.40. Amillo Escobedo clocked in at 4:49.67 to win the 500-yard freestyle.
Bauer was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly by reaching the wall at 51.95.
Also getting wins was senior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany) and sophomore Levi Lewis (Little Rock, Ark.). Reinhold won the 400-yard individual medley at 4:16.00 and Lewis finished in 2:00.32 to win the 200-yard backstroke.
NMU was bested at GVSU, 206-94 but rebounded Saturday as they defeated the Cardinals 183-99.
NMU returns to action next Saturday as they return to the PEIF Pool to take on the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point at 2 p.m.
