MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) -- The Northern Michigan University Men's Swim and Dive team took on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes Grand Valley State University and Saginaw Valley State University in a double dual meet and came away with two victories.
The Wildcats defeated SVSU 236-57, and the defending GLIAC Champions, GVSU, 171.50-115.50.
RELAYS FOR THE WIN
NMU started off strong by taking the first event of the meet, the 200-yard Medley Relay. The men swam it in 1:32.66 with a team of senior Renars Bundzis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary School), senior Arnoldo Herrera (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Jude), junior Maks Kapustin (Minneapolis, Minn./Henry Sibley), and senior Joshua Cosgrove (Bury, U.K./Bury College).
The Wildcats then finished with a win in their second relay of the day and the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team that took it consisted of junior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary/Bolyai Janos), Cosgrove, senior Grantas Dapkus (Kaunas, Lithuania/Kaunas Saule), and junior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany/Holty Gymnasium-Celle).
CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP
After being a part of the first winning relay, Bundzis went on to take the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.04. He then went on to take his third with of the day with the 200-yard backstroke, touching at 1:50.13.
Herrera snagged a win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:06.79, with the GVSU second place touching at just 2:06.80. Reinhold took the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.69, with freshman Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.) taking second for the Wildcats. Senior David Miranda (Vinaros, Spain/IES Jose Viloplane) touched first in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:53.67, and senior Ryan Leonard (South Wales, Australia/Toronto) took the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:53.96.
DIVING INTO IT
Senior Kyle Flickinger (Brimley, Mich./Sault Area) returned from injury in a big way, finishing the 1-meter diving with a score of 211.90 to win first place in the event.
The Wildcats will be on the road for their next meet, going to Stevens Point, Wisconsin to swim against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, November 10.
