HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Junior Baillie McGirk of the Michigan Tech women's basketball team has been selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. McGirk helped lead the Huskies to a pair of non-conference wins against Ursuline and Davis & Elkins to open the season.
McGirk, a guard from Rockford, Illinois, had an incredible start to the season, pouring in a career high 29 points in Tech's season opening 96-65 win over Ursuline Friday night. She knocked down 68.8 percent of her shots (11-16) Friday and combined to convert 61.9 percent of her field goals (13-21) and 66.7 percent of her looks from three-point range (4-6) over the course of two days. McGirk was also a perfect 4 for 4 at the free throw line over the weekend.
In addition to her point totals, McGirk was effective in every other facet of the game. She combined for nine rebounds, six assists, four steals, and had a blocked shot in the two games. McGirk hauled down four rebounds, dished out four assists, and came up with three steals in the Ursuline victory. She then led the team in rebounding with five boards in Tech's 75-39 triumph over the Senators Saturday.
The Huskies are 2-0 to start the season and will host MSU-Moorhead and Minnesota State in the home openers this Friday and Sunday respectively. Friday's tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with Sunday's battle slated for 1 p.m. in the SDC Gym.
