Lions Women's Hockey Falls Short Of Spartans

GENEVA, Ill. (WLUC) – A fast and furious rally fell short as the Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-4, 0-1 NCHA) fell 6-3 to Aurora (5-0, 1-0 NCHA), Friday afternoon at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

For the first 18 minutes, Aurora and Finlandia played on even terms. Defense and great goaltending kept the game at 0-0. The Spartans struck for two goals in the final two minutes to lead 2-0.

Senior Annah Smiddy kept the Lions in the game during the second period. She had 19 saves to see FinnU down 3-0 heading into the third.

Aurora scored twice in the first 90 seconds of the final period. Finlandia gritted its teeth and showed SISU. Freshman Kylee Hopp scored a short-handed goal at the 7:01 mark.

A little over a minute later, senior Kait Ryynanen power the puck through to make it 5-2. At the 13:16 mark, Hopp scored from Ryynanen and it was a game at 5-3. The Lions had several near misses in the final six minutes.

On face-offs, junior Abby Kolek had 20 wins for an impressive .667 percentage. Smiddy had 43 saves.

Finlandia stays on the road, Saturday, Nov. 16 playing Aurora. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. CST.
