ST. PAUL, Minn. (WLUC) – Freshman Abby Edstrom had a strong debut as the Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-2) fell 5-2 to St. Catherine (2-0), Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena.

“This is a tough result to swallow for a hard fought game,” said head coach Matt Marchel. “We didn’t have the legs to mount a comeback after a few mistakes cost us a couple of goals. Abby (Edstrom) had a great debut today in net.”

Once again, Finlandia drew first blood. Junior Kylee Dyni took advantage of two good passes to make it 1-0 with 2:53 gone in the game.

St. Catherine would tie it up about three minutes later. With 30 seconds left in the opening period, sophomore Brenna Ceglar scored her first collegiate goal to make it 2-1.

In the second period, the Wildcats score two goals to take the lead at 3-2. With time winding down, freshman Kylee Hopp just missed tying the game up. St. Catherine would score twice in the final period to seal the deal.

On face-offs, junior Abby Kolek had 12 wins. Edstrom finished with 37 saves.

Finlandia remains on the road, Tuesday, Nov. 5 taking on Northland. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CST
