Lions Women's Hockey Battles Tough Against Sabres

HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – The Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-8, 0-5 NCHA) never stopped battling in a 2-1 loss to Marian (Wis.) (2-5-1, 1-3-1 NCHA), Saturday night at the HOCO.

Finlandia came out fast with three great scoring opportunities in the first two minutes. At the 5:09 mark, senior Kait Ryynanen stole the puck at center ice. She proceeded to blast the puck past the goalie to make it 1-0.

Marian quieted the crowd scoring twice in the span of 23 seconds to take the lead 2-1. In the final minute of the opening period, the Lions had three shots on target that were blocked.

Over the last two periods, the Sabres and FinnU had several great chances but the goalies rose to the occasion. In the final 90 seconds of the game, Finlandia blasted the Marian net. The Lions had four shots saved including one by sophomore India Charles with three seconds left.

On face-offs, junior Abby Kolek had 17 wins. Senior Annah Smiddy had a strong night with 42 saves.

Finlandia remains home, Sunday, Dec. 8 taking on Marian (Wis.). The game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
