Lions Volleyball Battles Throughout The Day

HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – The Finlandia University volleyball team (0-15) never stopped fighting on the final day of the SISU Classic, Saturday at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Grace Christian (8-9) – Lost 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-13)
In the first set, Grace Christian jumped to a 14-3 lead, which effectively ended the set.

In the second set, Finlandia and the Tigers battled toe-to-toe the whole way. Sophomore Taylor Talerico zinged one in to FinnU up 15-11.
GCU came back to take the lead at 24-20. Finlandia refused to quit, forcing two errors to close to 24-22. The Tigers got the next point to win.

In the third set, Grace Christian scored the first 10 points to seal the deal.

Freshman Taylor Hendrick had eight kills and two solo blocks. Defensively, freshman Ella Lindgren had 13 digs while Talerico had 11 digs.

Mount Mary (2-17) – Lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-21)
In the first set, Finlandia out strong. Hendrick drop in an ace to make it 9-6, Lions. Mount Mary came back to tie the set at 9-9.

From that point, the teams were trading points. At 14-13, The Blue Angels scored seven straight points to take control.

In the second set, MMU made an attempt to end it early, going up 11-6. FinnU came slowly back into the match.

Talerico bounced one off the block to tie the set at 13-13. The teams went back and forth until Mount Mary got some breathing room at 24-20.
Kills from senior Harlie Caster and sophomore Briana Portice closed the gap to 24-23. The Blue Angels got the next point to end the set.

The third set was a nail bitter most of the way. Tied at 20-20, Finlandia forced MMU into an error to take the lead at 21-20. Mount Mary would score the next five points to end the match.

For Finlandia, Caster led five players in double figures in digs with 20. Freshman Braedyn Hurd and Lindgren had 18 digs each.

Finlandia hits the road, Friday, Oct. 11 taking on Luther and UW-Superior in Oshkosh, Wis. The matches are scheduled to start at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., CST respectively.
