ASHLAND, Wi. It was a total team effort as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (1-7-1) knocked down Northland (2-5) 2-1, Friday night at the Bay Area Civic Center.
The first period was similar to an Old West shootout as the teams combined for 21 saves. With 2:05 to go, sophomore Tyler Watungwa fired one past the goalie. That made it 1-0, Finlandia.
Freshman Ben Kelsch came up with two big saves in the final minute of the period. The second period was even more action packed with 26 total saves. At the 11:48 mark, freshman Hunter Moreland scored the back left to make it 2-0, Lions.
In the third period, Northland managed to get a goal with 3:06 left in the game. FinnU allowed just one shot after that while having three shots just miss.
Finlandia shut down the Lumberjacks on power plays not giving up any goals in five attempts. Freshman Tyler Vanuden had 10 face-off wins. Kelsch had a very strong performance finishing with 35 saves.
Finlandia is home, Saturday, Nov. 30, hosting Northland. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
