RIVER FALLS, Wis. (WLUC) – It was a battle all the way to the last seconds as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (0-1) lost 3-2 in overtime to UW-River Falls (1-0), Friday night at Hunt Arena.
In the first period, Finlandia and UW-River Falls fought on even terms. Junior Marcus Gloss and Zach Quinn put on a clinic. They combined for 20 saves, several of them on spectacular plays.
The Falcons hit the board first scoring about five minutes into the second period. With 2:32 to go, sophomore Dylan Paavola took advantage of great passing to tie the game at 1-1.
UW-River Falls would answer with 46 seconds left to go up 2-1. In the third period, strong play by the goalies kept the score at 2-1. With 1:35 left in the third period, sophomore Teddy Randell found junior Connor Hannon open in front of the net.
Hannon knocked the puck in to tie the game at 2-2. With 20 seconds left, freshman Lucas Patton just missed scoring for the Lions. Gloss made a great one-on-one save with five seconds left to send it into overtime.
In OT, freshman Jack Giddings fired up a shot that was knocked away by the Falcons with a minute left. UW-River Falls slipped the puck into the net with eight seconds left for the win.
Senior Blake Peavey had a strong night with 14 faceoff wins for a .560 percentage. FinnU was aggressive on defense blocking 16 shots. Gloss finished with 33 saves.
Finlandia stays on the road playing UW-River Falls, Saturday, Nov. 2. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. CST
