HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – Sophomore Joe Heinonen and junior Dylan Underwood had double-doubles as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team (0-3) lost 90-74 to Lakeland (1-1), Tuesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center.
The first 10 minutes of the contest was back and forth action. Up 15-13, Lakeland went on an 8-5 run to lead 23-18 at the 8:30 mark. The Muskies maintained a four to six point lead for the next six minutes.
Down 37-31 with 2:41 to go, Finlandia did not allow Lakeland to score again. The Lions came back with nine straight points. Two turnovers led to two FinnU buckets in the final 40 seconds for a 40-37 lead at the break.
In the second half, Heinonen got a tough bucket in the paint to make it 42-37, Finlandia a minute in. The Muskies reeled off a 14-2 run to lead 51-44 with 15:36 to go.
A three-point bomb from sophomore River Shumate and a jumper from Heinonen closed it to 53-49 at the 14:42 mark. Lakeland scored eight straight to pull away.
FinnU turned the ball over just 11 times on the night. The Lions had 38 defensive rebounds to 16 offensive for the Muskies and held them to 25% from 3-point range.
For Finlandia, Underwood had 25 points, 14 rebounds, nine assists and four steals and Heinonen had 10 points, 10 rebounds and blocked two shots. Shumate had 13 points, two steals and hit four triples while freshman Riley Hendrickson scored 11 points.
For Lakeland, Carlos Campos had 29 points and Eddie Burnett had 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Finlandia hits the road, Saturday, Nov. 16 taking on Lawrence. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. CST
