BAY CITY, Mich. (WLUC) -- Sophomore Lexi Smith (St. Germain, Wis.) was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference North Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats with 15.5 points in two games as the Wildcats defeated Wayne State University Thursday night but fell to #8 Ashland University Saturday.
At Wayne State, the sophomore finished 5-9 from the field to finish with 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds along with dishing out two assists. She followed it with a team-high 19 points against the Eagles Saturday while notching five rebounds and two more assists.
Smith is currently tied for the team's lead with 10.5 points per game and is second with a shooting percentage of 48.3 from the field. She is second with nine steals, tied for second with 5.1 rebounds per game and tied for third with 15 assists. Her 32 offensive rebounds leads the team and is tied for fourth in the GLIAC.
As a team, NMU is now 10-4 on the season and 5-1 in the GLIAC. Defensively, the Wildcats allow the fewest points per game in the league at just 52.3 points and kept conference leader Ashland to their second-lowest total of the season and 20 points below their average.
Smith is the first NMU player to achieve the honor since January 27, 2015. The Wildcats return to action Thursday as they will take on Lake Superior State University in the Berry Events Center Thursday night. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. with Art Van serving as Game Host.
