LAKE FOREST, Il. The Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-12, 0-7 NCHA) lost 8-1 to Lake Forest (7-8-1, 4-2-1 NCHA), Friday night at Alumni Memorial Arena.
Finlandia drew first blood as sophomore India Charles knocked the puck in at the 14:17 mark. Senior Annah Smiddy kept the Lions in the game with amazing save after save.
In the second period, FinnU had three great scoring opportunities that were denied by the Lake Forest goalie. With nine and a-half minutes gone, the Foresters scored three times in a three minute span to finally pull away.
The second period was basically a mirror image of the opening period. Finlandia had several great scoring opportunities that were saved. Midway through the period, the Bennies made it 2-0.
Sophomore Malone Hiebert had 10 face-off wins. The Lions set the school record with 77 saves, breaking the mark of 75 vs. UW-Superior (Jan. 5, 2015). Smiddy finished with 62 saves.
Finlandia remains on the road, Saturday, Jan. 18 taking on Lake Forest. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. CST
