SAULT, STE, MARIE, Mi. Lake Superior State hockey has released its schedule for the 2019-20 season.
The schedule consists of 28 conference games, eight non conference games and one exhibition contest.
Lake Superior State begins its regular-season schedule with a non conference series against Merrimack on Oct. 5-6 at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers then continue non conference play with a home series during Great Lake State Weekend against No. 3 Denver on Oct. 11-12, before going on the road for a pair of series at Michigan (Oct. 18-19) and No. 10/12 Notre Dame (Oct. 25-26).
For the month of November, the Lakers alternate between home and away Western Collegiate Hockey Association series each weekend of the month. The Lakers start conference play against Ferris State on Nov. 1-2 at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers then play their first road WCHA series at Bemidji State. LSSU’s remaining home series in November are against Michigan Tech (Nov. 15-16) and Bemidji State (Nov. 29-30), while there last road series of the month is at No. 13/14 Bowling Green (Nov. 22-23).
In December, the Lakers go on the road to face Minnesota State on Dec. 6-7, before returning home to face Bowling Green on Dec. 13-14 for the Lakers’ last contests of the calendar year. The time off following the Bowling Green series ends a streak of 11 consecutive weeks in action dating back to the beginning of the season.
Lake Superior State resumes its schedule with two weeks in Alaska – playing at Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 4-5 and at Alaska on Jan. 10-11. The Lakers have a bye the weekend of Jan. 17-18, before hosting Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 24-25. LSSU concludes January with an exhibition game at the U.S. National Under-18 Team on Jan. 31.
The regular season wraps up in February. The Lakers start the month at Michigan Tech on Feb. 7-8. Lake Superior State then plays consecutive homes series for the only time during its WCHA schedule – facing Alabama Huntsville (Feb. 14-15) and Northern Michigan (Feb. 21-22). The Lakers wrap up the regular season at Ferris State on Feb. 28-29.
The WCHA Playoffs are scheduled to begin with the quarterfinals the weekend of March 6-7. The semifinals are slated for the weekend of March 13-14 and the championship game is scheduled for March 21.
This past season, the Lakers (23-13-2, 16-10-2-0 WCHA) won their most games in a season since 1995-96, recorded their longest winning streak since 1996-97 (seven games), swept Ferris State in a road series for the first time since 1993-94, swept Michigan Tech in a series for the first time since 1983-84, won 16 WCHA Player of Week and six WCHA Player of the Month awards, had four All-WCHA Team selections, 14 WCHA All-Academic Team honorees, five WCHA Scholar-Athletes, a Hockey Humanitarian Award nominee, two Hobey Baker Award nominees, claimed the first Great Lakes Invitational Championship in program history and captured their first-ever WCHA Playoffs series win.
