ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - Escanaba was full of young hockey players Sunday, Jan. 27, for an event happy to be back in the area.
More than 140 kids ages eight and under had a full day of hockey at the Wells Sports Complex for this year's "In the Sticks Jamboree." 12 teams came to play, from the local Escanaba area to other places such as Negaunee, Iron mountain, Manistique and Newberry.
It's the first time the Escanaba Area Junior Hockey Association has been able to host a large event like this in more than 10 years to help grow the great game on ice.
"This whole event was at no cost to anyone. We had a lot of local business sponsors and friends and families of the association that put this all together. It helps align with what we try to do and make it all free for the kids. And even our first couple years of hockey at Escanaba is free for skaters including hockey gear," says Trevor Sholten, and EAJHA U8 hockey coach.
If you would like to learn more about the association or how you can get your child involved in hockey, you can visit the EAJHA website.
