HANCOCK, Mi. The HOCO erupted in joy as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team (4-13-2, 2-10-2 NCHA) beat Trine (8-8-1, 6-5-1 NCHA) 3-2 in overtime, Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Finlandia put Trine on their heels for the first five minutes of the game. After several near misses, junior Cale Markham muscled the puck over the line. That made it 1-0 Finlandia at the 5:10 mark.

With 3:46 left in the first period, freshman Tyler Vanuden scored off a pass from junior Connor Hannon. That put the Lions up 2-0. Trine cooled off the rabid FinnU crowd scoring with one second left in the period.

The second period saw both Finlandia and the Thunder fire away at the nets. However, Brett Young and junior Marcus Gloss made numerous great plays to keep the score at 2-1.

At the 3:58 mark of the third period, Trine scored to deadlock the game at 2. The Lions did not allow a single shot in the last three minutes. Markham had a good looking shot stopped with 18 seconds left.

Finlandia went on to overtime for the third straight game and seventh overall. Gloss knocked one away early in the extra period. With 3:19 left, Hannon blasted the puck through to ignite the FinnU faithful.

Hannon and Vanuden each scored two points. Senior Blake Peavey and Vanuden had 13 face-off wins. Gloss came away with 29 saves.

Finlandia takes to the road, Friday, Jan. 24 playing St. Norbert. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. CST
