Former NMU Hockey Player Kinnunen dies in accident

Atlantic Beach, Fl. A former NMU hockey player from Negaunee was killed in a vehicle-pedestrian accident in Florida.

According to WJXT TV in Jacksonville and the Florida Highway Patrol Justin Kinnunen was trying to cross Atlantic Boulevard in Atlantic Beach, Florida around 11:30 Friday night when he was struck by a SUV.

The 35-year-old Kinnunen died at the scene.

Troopers have said charges are pending on the driver Wiam Battah.

Kinnunen had six goals and six assists in his senior season for the Wildcats and had career totals of 14 goals and 25 assists.

He registered a hat trick in a playoff game against Western Michigan in March of 2003 during his junior year.

Prior to joining the Wildcats Kinnunen played for the Sault Sainte Marie Indians of the North American Hockey League and the Marquette Electricians.

He was a 1999 graduate of Negaunee High School.

After his Wildcats' career Kinnunen signed a contract with the Dayton Bombers of the East Coast Hockey League.

Kinnunen was a pilot based out of Dallas, Texas.
