ASHLAND, Wi Senior Shannon Anderson nearly had two double-doubles as the Finlandia University volleyball team (6-17) went 2-0, Tuesday night at Chapple Gym. The Lions beat Northland College (3-22) 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23) and North Central (6-19) 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-13, 25-18).
In the first set, the teams battle on even terms until 8-7. Finlandia went on a 5-1 run to make it 13-8.
Northland College came back with a 9-4 burst to tie it at 17-17. The team traded points for the most part until 22-20. The Lions then scored three points in a row to take the set.
In the second set, the big moment came with FinnU up 14-10. Finlandia forced an error and senior Jessie Diaz served up five straight points to take control.
In the third set, the Lions would get up by four or more and the Lumberjills would come battling back. Down 21-17, Northland College pulled to 24-23 before senior Marina Dalton put the ball away to end the match.
For Finlandia, Dalton had 12 kills and S. Anderson had eight kills, 10 digs and two aces. Diaz had 21 digs.
For Northland College, Vivienne Kallio and Emma Rusch had eight kills each while Adrianna Galtieri had 17 digs.
North Central (Minn.)
In the first set, North Central led throughout almost all of the set. Up 20-19, The Rams closed on a 5-2 run to take the set.
In the second set, Finlandia and NCU had their runs. The Lions got off to a 13-9 lead before North Central came back with a 9-5 run to make it 18-18.
The Rams were up 22-20 when junior Megan Alworden stepped up and got four points to make it 24-22. NCU tied it at 24 but a service error and smash from senior Nicole Anderson tied it up.
In the third set, the Lions came out firing with a 9-2 run and never looked back. FinnU hit .387 for the set.
In the fourth set, Hannah Fischer got an ace to pull North Central to two, 11-9. Finlandia then scored five straight points to close it out.
For Finlandia, sophomore Kaisa Holmstrom had 12 kills and three aces and S. Anderson had 11 kills and 16 digs. Dalton had four aces and Alworden and Diaz had 13 digs each.
For North Central, Maddie Stocker had 15 digs.
Finlandia remains on the road, Friday, Oct. 19 taking on UW-Eau Claire and Denison in Olivet, Mich. The matches are scheduled to start at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., respectively.
