Finlandia opens softball season in Florida with two losses

FORT MYERS, Fl. Senior Emily Nguyen had four hits as the Finlandia University softball team (1-5) lost twice, Sunday morning at Century Link Field.

Clark used an error and four hits to score four runs in the first inning. The Cougars were held to two hits the rest of the way.

In the third inning, junior Cassie Lopez singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Nguyen crushed a double to left field to score Lopez to make it 4-1.

In the sixth inning, senior Kassandra Avila reached on an error and moved to third on a hit from senior Harlie Caster. Junior Daniella Gonzalez smacked a single down the right field line to score Avila. The Lions had a runner on in the sixth and seventh innings but they were stranded.

For Finlandia, Caster had two hits and stole two bases while Nguyen had two hits. Bent (0-2) gave up six hits, four runs with one earned, walked a batter and struck out two in six innings.

For Clark, Isabella Diorio gave up eight hits, two runs with one earned and struck out six in seven innings.

Kenyon 16 Finlandia 0

Kenyon struck for two runs in the first inning for the early lead. In the bottom of the first, Bent singles and moved to third on a double to left centerfield by Nguyen.

Following a ground out, Avila walked to load the bases. The Lords got a ground out and then scored six runs in the second inning to pull away.

For Finlandia, Nguyen led the way with two hits. Avila (0-1) gave up nine hits, eight runs and walked three in two innings.

For Kenyon, Sara Campagna had four hits and scored three runs. Sophia Gottdiener (1-0) gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one in two innings.

Finlandia will play Drew and Albion, Monday, March 2. The games are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
