Finlandia hires Sokolow as Women's Soccer Head Coach

HANCOCK, Mi. Grace Sokolow has been named head coach of the Finlandia University women’s soccer team. She is set to begin her duties on July 8.

“Grace is a strong addition to the Finlandia coaching staff,” said athletic director Curtis Wittenberg. “Grace brings with her a strong and varied coaching background. Her energy and passion really showed through during the interview process. I’m excited to see where she can take our women’s program.”

Sokolow comes to Finlandia after three years as the assistant coach for women’s soccer at Austin College (Texas). During her tenure 30 athletes were named to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll. In addition the Roos’ were awarded a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award in 2017 and 2018.

Most recently, Sokolow served as a staff coach for Colorado Elevaton F.C., a grassroots youth soccer club based out of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

“I am beyond thrilled to join the Finlandia University family,” said Sokolow. “The fierce pride of everyone on campus in the university is tangible. Finlandia is an institution dedicated to the holistic education of each student, and nurturing and developing her students into servant leaders. I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of that process. Soccer is a game that truly belongs to the players, and I am excited for the opportunity to build on the program’s recent success with a player-centric approach.”

Sokolow was a four-year letter winner and two-year starter at Vassar (N.Y.). She was named to the Liberty League All-Academic Team three times (2006, 07, 08). Sokolow also contributed a monthly sports column to the college newspaper, The Miscellany Times.

A native of Parker, Colo., Sokolow holds an A.B. in Women’s Studies from Vassar, M.A. in American Studies with an emphasis in Education and Education Policy from Lehigh and M.S.W. in Social Work Business with an emphasis in Leadership and Management from USC.

Sokolow holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” License, Premier and Goalkeeping Level 2 Diplomas from United Soccer Coaches, and is an NFHS Accredited Interscholastic Coach of both Soccer and Strength and Conditioning. She is a proud member of the Alliance of Women Coaches (now WeCoach) and a 2018 graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy. Her other professional memberships include the Positive Coaching Alliance, US Soccer, United Soccer Coaches, and USA Weightlifting.

Sokolow is the proud owner of Molly Pitcher, a rescue cat.
